KIBUSWA SCHOOL
KENYA
This proposed school in Kibuswa, Kenya, is funded by a non-profit organization, Shoe4Africa which builds schools and hospitals in East Africa. We worked towards three design goals: welcoming, inspiring and economy. The roof canopy points out towards the open fields in both directions in a welcoming gesture that is also a practical feature, mindful of the local climate. Specifying materials that are local is economical and will help anchor the building with its neighbors. We parsed the material palette down to just the essentials: aluminum roofing, structural wood columns and beams, and masonry walls, in order to focus on the structure and space.
