LA VIE BOHèME
New York, NY

The charms of a bohemian lifestyle are alive and well in this 700 square foot West Village apartment. The challenge was to bring light and a sense of space to the home while retaining its original warmth and charm. Through a close collaboration with the client, the Rise Projects team made major design moves that re-imagined the home.

Rise Projects moved the entry and enlarged the opening into the living space with a dramatic archway. The rustic, dark granite floor contrasts with the bright batten board wall panel. The panels also serve to obscure several doors on that wall. The kitchen was expanded and the installation of an island becomes a focal point. This re-envisioned spot is fitting for an artist and a great cook with a rich Italian heritage. The floor transitions from stone in the vestibule to white oak. The exquisite marble counter and backsplash juxtapose with the dark ink cabinet finish.

New custom shelving, made from a rich colored walnut was installed in front of the exposed brick wall in the living room. We added a second entry to the bedroom through a large sliding panel. When open, the apartment feels larger and more airy. Light from the adjoining room floods in both directions. The brightness of the space was increased by enlarging two existing windows in the bedroom into full height, steel and glass french doors with a new juliet balconies. These open up the bedroom to a more expansive views of the quaint and leafy common yard. The bathroom was also transformed with new fixtures, built-ins and tile.
